In season: They hold onto their dead leaves until spring when they drop them and produce new leaves
 
Habitat: Eastern Deciduous Forest
 
Uses: Astringent in the bark works to constrict the bleeding and as an antiseptic the bark works to protect from infection
 
Preparations: Used as a poultice from roots, bark, or leaves

Active chemical: Tannin: Tannic acid is an antiseptic
